Barton L. Halpern, MD, is the founding member and managing partner of Eye Doctor of Lancaster (1979). He graduated with Honors in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania (1970) and completed his medical degree (Summa Cum Laude) from the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center (1974). Dr. Halpern served his Medical Internship at Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (1975) and his Ophthalmology Residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, New York (1978). He participated in a clinical fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital (1979) to practice as a specialist in Corneal and External Diseases of the eye.

Dr. Halpern is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of honor and professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Society. He has lectured at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, Hershey Medical Center, Albany Medical Center, ASCRS, the Nantucket Cornea Meeting and the International Contact Lens Meeting.

Dr. Halpern brought several new surgical procedures and technologies to Lancaster County. He performed Lancaster's first excimer laser surgery (PTK), argon laser treatment of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal tears, YAG laser capsulotomy for secondary cataracts, small-incision flexible silicone intraocular lens surgery, Toric IOLS and multifocal IOLs. He provided Lancaster's first photo slit microscopy, threshold visual fields, corneal topography, and optic nerve topography.

He is Chief of Ophthalmology at Lancaster Regional Medical Center, former Chief of Ophthalmology at Ephrata Community Hospital, and also on staff at Lancaster General Hospital and Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

Dr Halpern performs sutureless small incision cataract surgery, including Restor® multifocal & toric lens implantation, and LASIK and other refractive surgeries. Dr. Halpern was awarded a US patent for his surgical plans to help surgeons perform LASIK surgery. He is proficient in corneal surgery including corneal and conjunctival transplants.
